The Story: Alright, everyone is wanting some Valentines recipes. I didn’t want to just dye some vanilla cake pink and make it all girly looking or make red velvet (because I am allergic to red dye), so here is my take on a “cute” cupcake. Chocolate Malt Cupcakes, pretty freaking cute. And with a straw! Who can resist that?
Make Sure you check our my Baking Tutorial for this recipe!

-
4. add malted milk powder to cake mix and stir.

Hey Lizzy,
Your site is looking great!. I’ve made your cinnamon toast crunch cupcakes.( my hubby and his coworkers loved them!)I will be cooking this years valentine banquet at my church. I have a feeling if I dont make something chocolate for dessert I’m sure there will be people rushing at me with forks and knives. And I cant make any cupcakes with nuts, carrots or coconut since I have guests with allergies. I saw these chocolate covered strawberries at costco(like chocolate covered raisins) and was wondering if they would pair good as a garnish with your chocolate strawberry cream cupcakes. If not, any other suggestions? Thanks 🙂

The cupcakes are adorable! We try to stay away from dyes here too. Have you ever tried beetroot powder in red velvet cake?
Lizzy Mae says
I have not tried that! I will look into it, thanks

Love your site. Was wondering what tip you used to do the frosting.
Lizzy Mae says
I used a 2D tip, but it’s not the Wilton 2D. It’s closer to a 1M open star tip.

Adorable! Planned to make these this morning for a party, when I realized I didn’t have Devil’s Food Cake Mix. Had already gotten everything started. So I improvised and made “Vanilla Malts”! Used French Vanilla cake mix, and left the cocoa powder out of the frosting. Delicious! Thanks for the super cute idea!
Lizzy Mae says
Oh fun! Well I am glad it worked out! I have a similar recipe I will be posting soon, watch for it 🙂

I love the girly-theme and the cute presentation. The fact that it uses Devils food cake mix is also a plus. I never ran out of such in my pantry. Great cupcakes!

Cute cupcakes. I was wondering if you used vanilla or chocolate malted milk powder in these?
Lizzy Mae says
I didn’t even know there was such a thing as chocolate malted milk powder! I used vanilla, from Carnation.
Lavinia says
I bought all the ingredients to make the cupcakes and noticed I bought chocolate malted milk powder. Do you think it will affect the recipe at all?
Lizzy Mae says
It should turn out fine!

Hi:
Love your website – recipes and ideas. You have given me so much confidence in baking cupcakes!!!
Question: For the icing do you use unsweetened or sweetened cocoa powder? Or it does not matter?
Thanks
Alicia
Lizzy Mae says
Unsweetened 🙂
Veena says
Can I omit Egg in this recipe?
Lizzy Mae Early says
I would not suggest it
Linda says
Since Duncan Hines has reduced their cake mixes all but the Signature Brands would using the Swiss Chocalate mix work for this recipe?
Lizzy Mae Early says
The smaller cake mixes still work (I use Pillsbury) but just add a little less liquid!
Lisa says
I have been told that you can substitute applesauce for oil. Have you tried in this recipe (malt cupcakes) and does it affect the taste? Sometimes the oil in recipes can be to much but is necessary to keep the cupcake moist.
Thanks
Oliv says
what kind of chocolate you use Lizzy?
Lizzy Mae Early says
unsweetened cocoa for frostings!

Hi! I am going to make these as a possibility for someone’s wedding. They want a filling though. What do you think about filling them with the frosting you have for your pumpkin cupcakes in your Your Cup of Cake book and dipping them in chocolate ganache? Too much? I am going to make them for them this weekend to taste. Thanks! Love the look of the new site. I received a 24 cupcake pan for Christmas just like yours. My birthday is coming up and I’ve requested another one and some more scoops you like. 🙂

I realize this post is over 2 years old, but I just came across this recipe and just made it…just now…at 9 o’clock at night…after my 3 kids are ASLEEP…Ah, peace and quiet… and some YUMMY CUPCAKES! I won’t be able to frost it until tomorrow, but the cupcake by itself is fabulous! Lizzy, your website has broadened my baking horizons. I’m so thrilled to learn that you can do more with a cake mix besides just adding oil, eggs and water. So fun. Thank you for all your great recipes.
