The Story:
Confession: I always have food with me. I just can’t go anywhere without some chocolate in my purse or a granola bar in my pocket.
So naturally, I was sitting in church a few weeks ago with a bag full of this stuff. And the 7-year-old boy in front of me kept glancing over his shoulder. He didn’t dare make eye contact with me, but he just starred at the bag of puppy chow hoping it would magically jump into his mouth. I humored the people around me and asked if he wanted it, he gave a quick nod, I held out the bag and then it was gone. He snatched it away so fast I could hardly release my grip on the bag.
He didn’t look over his shoulder again. Perhaps he was worried I would ask for it back.

So what temps do you think this will withstand? We are having a grad party with small galvanized buckets with flowers on the tables and I thought this would be a fun accompaniment to snack on. However, it may be really warm here (ya never know!! we’ve had 50 degrees and 100’s!!). As I don’t want to really do any extra work… your thoughts???
Lizzy Mae Early says
It should be pretty okay. I would make sure to use chocolate chips, not melts for your chocolate because the chips have stabilizers in them which will help to keep it from melting. Also, you can not use as much peanut butter to keep it from melting as well.

So cute! Our girls will love this!

Hi Lizzy, I made your Butterfinger dirt this eve, and used chocolate chips with the peanut butter and vanilla and it just didn’t completely melt to a pour. It got thicker the more I microwaved it.
Then I went to the melts and the same thing happened. I did use reduced peanut butter, could that have made a difference?
I make your cupcakes all the time, everyone always asks for the recipes and your web site, heavenly!!!
Lizzy Mae Early says
I have done puppy chow with chocolate chips before, and they do melt down. Your microwave could be extra hot or maybe the particular brand of chocolate chips you’re using just won’t cooperate. Even when I use only melts with NO peanut butter, the melts still melt perfectly. So it must be your microwave that is the problem for these. You can do it over the stove top by using a double boiler, or “making” one yourself which is what I do. Put a small pot of water on the stove (1/2 full) and let it get to a boil. Place a smaller pot in the water and melt the chocolate in that pot. Make sure the bottom of that pot stay touching the water on the bottom and not pot on pot. Hopefully that makes sense!
Abby says
I’ve had this problem with with melting chocolate chips before as well. After playing around with the power setting on the microwave, I found that I could stir my melted chips into a perfectly smooth consistency! It may differ per microwave, but increasing time while decreasing the power setting should generally work to melt the chocolate at a low heat. For example, I melt mine for 2 minutes at level 50 (half of normal setting). I haven’t tried this WITH peanut butter, but you could try it! Hope that helps, if you’re still interesting in trying the microwave route!
– Lizzy: love your website! You have so many fun recipes!
Lizzy Mae Early says
Thanks for the extra help with this common problem! I totally agree, I pull mine out before they are melted all the way and then I just continue to stir until they are melted and smooth.

Hi
I am English living in Greece – and no idea what is Rice chex cereal and chocolate melts?? So I can find an equivalent as I REALLY want to make these for my son…. thanks LOVE your site!
Lizzy Mae Early says
Google rice chex cereal and check your grocery store for a similar looking thing. It’s a rice cereal in a thatch shape. Chocolate melts are just chocolate that is meant for melting. Usually milk chocolate chips will work pretty well in place of it

love dirt and worms, puppy chow two! combined? even better!
Brianna says
Hi Lizzy. I just got your cupcake book in the mail, I love it. I was wondering how you get your chex to get coated so well. When I was coating the puppy chow the broken oreos started to clump instead of coat the chex completely. I was just wonder if you have any tips on how to get the puppy chow coated better! Thanks!
Lizzy Mae Early says
Make sure they are first coated with with chocolate well. I like to then toss my oreo crumbs into a bag (You can use only the cookie part and not the cream part of the cookie and make sure they are finely crushed, use a blender or food processor) andthen throw in the chex, seal the bag and shake, shake, shake!

Thank you!

Hi, I’m also a lover of puppy chow (I’ve made 14 kinds myself) and I love your site! I’m interested in making this recipe, but I would like to know how many Oreos I would need to equate 1 1/3 cups (I’m horrible at guesstimating).
Thanks!
Lizzy Mae Early says
8-11 Oreos I think! But it’s fine if it’s not exact!!
