The frosting alone will make you feel like you died and went to heaven. It doesn’t matter how old you are, you’ll love these Chocolate Cookie Dough Cupcakes.
The Story:
I think we all can admit that most of the cookie dough gets eaten before it goes in the oven, right?
Because let’s face it, cookie dough just makes everything better. Bad dates, bad test scores, mean bosses, frizzy hair days, running into the boy you like when you’re in sweats and have no makeup on… yeah, cookie dough fixes it all.

Mini Chocolate Chips for decoration
Instructions
-
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line pan with cupcake liners.
-
2. Sift cake mix into a small bowl and set aside.
-
3. In a large bowl, combine eggs, melted butter, milk, sour cream and vanilla extract until smooth.
-
4. Stir in cake mix and chocolate chips.
-
5. Fill cupcake liners 3/4 full and bake for 15-20 minutes or until an inserted knife comes out clean.
-
6. Let cool.
-
7. Cookie Dough Frosting: Beat butter. Add vanilla extract, flour, brown sugar and salt and beat again. Slowly add in milk and powdered sugar until you reach your desired consistency. Taste as you go! You want it to taste like a cross between cookie dough and frosting, so the flour and other ingredients make it like cookie dough while the powdered sugar helps keep it a frosting. Feel free to play around with the ratios!
-
8. Pipe onto cooled cupcakes and top with mini chocolate chips!

ahhhh that looks SO good
I’m definitely making these this weekend, and I’m sure my family will be very happy.
On a side note, I love your blog and the recipes you post! I’m in university right now and don’t have time for extensive baking recipes between exams, meetings, and papers, so I appreciate the box mix and all the wonderful ways to doctor it up. Thanks for a fabulous recipe once again! 🙂
These are amazing! I made them yesterday for my cupcake a week project and the cake itself is new favorite chocolate cupcake recipe. The frosting’s not so bad either! Completely agree with you that cookie dough fixes everything. Thanks for providing such great cupcake recipes. Everyone of yours that I’ve made has been fantastic.
If I wanted to make these a vanilla cupcake instead of a chocolate cupcake, would I still use the same ingredients? Have you tried that?
It’s all the same, but decrease the oil to 1/3 cup!
Made these over the weekend and they were wonderful! Thank you again for making baking so much fun!
Lizzy, if I were to add a cookie dough filling to the cupcakes, is there anything I should do differently when making the batter? Btw these look delicious. Thanks!
Lizzy , making my mouth water just looking at them, I’m going to make today and bring them up to my daughters work for her crew !! They work hard and deserve. A treat.

Hello:
Thank you for your recipes…I love how you add more flavors to a cake mix. I’m a new baker and I’m having challenges making the frosting. It’s always not stiff enough and they melt. I also did the red velvet one, and the frosting is the same. What am I doing wrong?
