Double Chocolate Soft Oreos that are so easy to make, they’re dangerous. Homemade Oreos are always my go-to treat because they’re easy, not messy and everyone loves them. You can also make them with a mint or peanut butter filling!
The Story:
It was 7 PM. I climbed into bed, got under the covers, pulled up Netflix on my computer and dunked my Oreos into my big mug of cold milk. It was a perfect night.
It doesn’t take much to make me happy.
Double Chocolate Oreos
Ingredients
Chocolate Cookies:
- 1 box devil's food cake mix sifted to remove any lumps
- 2 eggs
- 1/3 C. oil
- 2 Tbsp. brown sugar
Chocolate Filling:
- 1/2 C. butter softened
- 8 oz. cream cheese or an extra 1/2 C. butter
- 1/2 C. unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tsp. vanilla extract
- 2 C. powdered sugar more if needed
Instructions
-
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line cookie sheets with parchment paper.
-
2. In a large bowl, combine cake mix, eggs, oil and brown sugar until smooth.
-
3. Make small dough balls about the size of a walnut and place on cookie sheets 3 inches apart.
-
4. Bake for 6-8 minutes depending on how brownie-like or cake-like you want them to be.
-
5. Let cookies cool.
-
6. Chocolate Filling: Combine all ingredients until smooth in a standing mixer. Add more powdered sugar if too thin or not sweet enough.
-
7. Frost the bottoms of half the cookies and place the unfrosted cookies on top to create little Oreo cookie "sandwiches."
-
8. Place in tupperware and refrigerate for at least 20 minutes. Chilling them helps the filling not to gush out when you eat them BUT it's not necessary.

Annnnnnnnd now I’m craving homemade Oreos. You’d think after a weekend of eating nothing but sweets, I’d be cured of sugar cravings for at least a day! But, nope— these pictures have brought them all right back 🙂

I made these for my taller half tonight–he is obsessed with chocolate Oreos!
I did mess up a little: I cracked the second egg, got distracted, and didn’t put it in. *facepalm*
Made the mixture drier, but it still came together well, and they taste good! My husband took a bite, started chewing, then pulled the cookie away and said, “wow… this is awesome, hun”. yay 😀
I bet doing the recipe right next time will taste better, though. lol
Thanks so much! I think I’ll try the minty ones next…
Lizzy Mae Early says
Well I’m glad it still worked out!!

I was wondering though… would I use the same amounts of oil and brown sugar and eggs if I wanted to use a butter cake mix instead of devil’s food?
I really want to try another version of this, turning the cookies into “Uh-oh Oreos” 🙂
Lizzy Mae Early says
I would switch the oil to use melted butter, use about 2 tsp. less though! And same amounts of brown sugar and eggs! Let me know how it goes!!

I tried the butter cake mix last night, and I really liked the outcome! I kinda wish I had a way to post a photo, but I didn’t even remember to get one, anyway.
I don’t know if this is something you’d want to tweak for yourself, but here’s what I did:
1 Pillsbury golden butter cake mix
1/3 cup butter, melted (I then lessened it by 2 tsp, like you’d suggested)
2 eggs
2 T light brown sugar
1 tsp coconut extract
1/2 cup of sweetened shredded coconut (approximately–didn’t measure this; just sprinkled in and added until it looked like enough)
I mixed everything according to your original directions, and used a small cookie scoop to portion out the batter. This particular mixture was REALLY sticky, so I had a bit of water nearby to keep my fingertips wet while I flattened then dough balls.
Baked at the same temp, but for me it took more like 10-11 minutes for these cookies to be firm enough after cooling, and not taste like raw batter.
And I just used your chocolate filling recipe to make them into sandwich cookies! 🙂
I don’t even like coconut other than like, granola bars, but after taste testing as I baked… um, yeah, kinda ate 4 of the cookies plain… *sheepish grin*
Lizzy Mae Early says
Awesome! I’ll have to give it a try. You can also chill the dough in the fridge if the dough is sticky! That’s what happens to the red velvet version 🙂

oh btw, I made these to send to my mom for her birthday. That’s why I was making something in a flavor I don’t usually care for. lol
