Always Treat Never Trick

I’m so excited for Halloween this year! I love the costumes, the parties and all the cute kiddos coming to my door asking for candy.  I must admit, I go overboard and always buy full sized candy bars.  I don’t get more than 20 kids anyway and their faces when they see the big candy bars is just priceless! Too bad I can’t hand out these Pumpkin Swirl Cupcakes…

Fairy Godmother just needed some Candy

The finishing touches are really what brings this pumpkin look-alike cupcake to life!  I used Tootsie Rolls to make my stems and watermelon Air Heads to make my vines.  You can use other candies instead but these have been my favorite because they can be molded and don’t get soggy from the frosting.  And it’s perfect for the kiddos!  They can sit there and make their stems and vines to decorate their cupcakes.

Adorable Pumpkin Swirl Cupcakes

Obviously, you can make whatever type of of cake you want for these.  The only reason why I made chocolate was because I wanted to cupcakes to look like they were sitting on the ground. But if you want to use orange cupcake liners and make a white/pumpkin/yellow cake then the entire cupcake can look like one big pumpkin!

Pumpkin Swirl Cupcakes for Halloween

1 box Devil's Food Cake Mix (I prefer pillsbury)
3 eggs
1/2 C. melted butter or oil
1 C. sour cream
1/2 C. milk
1 C. butter, room temperature
2 1/2 C. powdered sugar
2 tsp. vanilla extract
orange food dye
Watermelon Air Heads
Tootsie Rolls

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line cupcake pans with cupcake liners.
2. Combine cake mix, eggs, melted butter, sour cream and milk until smooth. Fill cupcake liners 3/4 full and bake for 18-20 minutes or until an inserted knife comes out clean.
3. Let cool.
4. Frosting: Beat butter and powdered sugar. If it's too thick, add a little milk or if it's too thin add more powdered sugar. Add vanilla and dye until you get the right pumpkiny color!
5. Pipe frosting onto cupcakes and then mold a piece of tootsie roll into a "stem" and part of a watermelon Air Head into a "vine." I have a video on making these, so watch that above!

I feel exactly the same way. I wish I could hand out homemade treats. Why do a few bad people always ruin everything and even in the dark ages when I went out on Halloween this was a problem. In my childhood in the 60s it was razorblades in apples. People used to give apples either fresh or in caramel, etc. Then losers began putting razorblades in the fruit in one city. I’ve thought about having a big tray of cupcakes or other treat beside me for the families that know me and would feel comfortable. The worst, I end up with a lot of homemade treats to pass out to people the next day.

Yes! Too bad, but they also wouldn’t travel very well in those trick or treat bags anyway haha
