The Story:
With summer just around the corner, it means tons of picnics, family reunions, friends getting together and neighborhood parties. And what does every party have? A table to desserts. So what do you go for? Is it the Costco cookies that catch your eye, the sheet cake, the last slice of pie? Well for me, it is always the brownies that get me. You just can’t go too wrong with a brownie. Even made from the box they are delicious and chocolatey heaven.

Chocolate Malt Brownies
Ingredients
Malt Brownies:
- 1 Box Betty Crocker Brownies
- 1/2 C. malt powder Carnation makes a brand
- eggs, oil, and water called for on the back of the box
Chocolate Malt Frosting:
- 1/2 C. butter softened
- 1/2 C. cocoa powder unsweetened
- 1 1/2 C. powdered sugar
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/4 C. malt powder
Malt balls, crushed
Instructions
-
1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees and prepare brownies as directed on the back of the box. You can use whatever brand you want, but Betty Crocker is the BEST for brownies. (You can also replace the water called for with milk.)
-
2. Stir in 1/2 C. malt powder and pour into a greased pan. The smaller the pan, the thicker the brownie.
-
3. Cook according to the box directions.
-
4. Let Cool.
-
5. Frosting: Beat butter, cocoa powder, powdered sugar, vanilla and malt powder until smooth. Add 1 Tbsp. milk if it is too thick.
-
6. Frost cooled brownies and top with crushed malt balls for decoration and texture.
Finally a recipe with malt balls! My husband loves them! So I will be pinning this for later use!
I have two malt cupcake recipes… strawberry malt and chocolate malt!
I love the way you all call them malt balls…In England they are called Maltesers… 🙂
I know the malt powder you’re talking about, but I have a heck of a time finding it around here. Do you think I could substitute original Ovaltine powder instead? These sound delicious and I would love to make them.
Yeah, I’m sure you can. I will call ahead to grocery stores and ask if they have it or else I will be running around town all day haha. Then I’ll just buy a few containers of it.
I will give this a go because i have a confession to make-i have never EVER had a brownie in my whole entire life! I know, shocking! However, i trust this website, after all the first batch of cupcake i have EVER made in my whole life were the snickers cupcakes and they were AH-MAZING!
Hopefully this will have the same results!
Do you have any tips lizzy, for how to make them as perfect as yours? I don’t know what a brownie SHOULD taste like you see…
Thanks
Kiera x
Use the Betty Crocker mix and make it accordning to the box directions. If you like them cakey, add an extra egg to the batter and pull them out of the oven when a knife comes out clean from the center. If you like them a little fudge, pull them out just before the knife comes out clean. At the moment when you would say to yourself “they need 5 extra minutes”
What a brilliant way to spruce up a boxed brownie mix!
Lizzy…You are a brownie lover after my own kind!!! I can usually resist everything BUT the brownies!! I hope you have more over-the-top brownies coming because I will definitely be interested. I think they could be the next “wave” to replace the cupcake trend. What do you think?
Ciel! I thought of you as I passed the turn off to your house yesterday (I drove home to Oregon)! I’m brownie obsessed but I don’t think they can quite replace cupcakes because they don’t have the “cute” factor going for them.
MMM the malt frosting looks absolutely gorgeous! Would love to sink my teeth into a few of these brownies!
Hello Lizzy! I am Brazilian and I love cupcakes. I live in Rio de Janeiro (You know?) I have a blog (http://ilovecupcakesbrazil.blogspot.com.br/) where I post my experiences in the kitchen among other things. I’m loving your site, it’s beautiful, charming .. and recipes?! Wonderful! .. I want to congratulate you for this beautiful work! aah I’m not fluent in English so now I apologize for any grammatical mistake lol
Chocolate Malt Frosting! I must find malt powder!
Any kind of brownie recipe is all good with me! Love the added malt balls on top.. so good! 🙂
They look so moist and delicious!
The Betty Crocker box says to preheat to 350*. Your directions say 325*. Is there a reason for the difference?
you can do the 350, it will take a little less time to cook. Mine were just thicker so I wanted it low and slow to not dry out the edges.
Hey, this recipe sounds amazing but could you tell me a substitute for malt powder please? I don’t get it in my country.
I don’t know if there is a substitute, I’m sorry!
