The Story:
What do you get when you combine Oreos, cookie dough and brownies? A very happy kid… or adult. After seeing the brownie/cookie/Oreo bars all over Pinterest I thought there needs to be a cupcake with the same combo. Is it a little crazy and over the top? Yes–but your taste buds will thank me for the recipe.

Triple Threat Cupcakes
Ingredients
Cake:
- 24 Oreos split in half cream sides only
- 1 box white cake mix
- 3 eggs
- 1/3 cup oil
- 1 cup milk whole, buttermilk, or whatever you have
- 3/4 cup sour cream
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
Cookie Dough Filling:
- 3/4 cup butter softened
- 5 tablespoons brown sugar packed
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 1/2 cups flour
- 7 oz sweetened condensed milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup mini chocolate chips
Brownie Frosting:
- 1 cup butter softened
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon milk
- 3-4 cups powdered sugar
- 5-7 brownies crumbled
Instructions
-
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line pans with cupcake liners.
-
2. Place your Oreo halves cream side up on the bottom of each liner. (Feel free to eat the non-cream side as you bake.)
-
3. Sift cake mix into a small bowl and set aside.
-
4. In a large bowl, use a whisk to combine eggs, oil, milk, sour cream and vanilla extract.
-
5. Add cake mix and stir until smooth.
-
6. Fill cupcake liners (over oreo halves) 3/4 full and bake for 17-22 minutes, or until an inserted knife comes out clean.
-
7. Cookie Dough Filling: Combine all ingredients in a stand mixer, except chocolate chips, and beat until smooth. Then fold in chocolate chips. Add more flour if needed to thicken.
-
8. Use a knife to cut out small holes of each cupcake and fill with cookie dough filling. You can do this while the cupcakes are still warm.
-
9. Frosting: Beat butter for 2 minutes. Add cocoa, vanilla extract and milk. Scrape down the bowl as needed. Slowly add powdered sugar until you reach your desired consistency. Add a little more milk if the frosting becomes too thick. Fold in brownie crumbles.
-
10. Pipe frosting onto cupcakes over the cookie filling and top with sprinkles, mini chocolate chips or Oreos.
-
11. Taste bud party!
Triple threat indeed these are amazing.
Thanks for this recipe. I made your Andies Candies one for work at Christmas and won 1st place. My husbands office has a faculty/staff picnic Friday night. 46 people – will just double it. Looks delish !!!
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!! just when I am thinking…that’s it what else can Lizzy come out with??!! this is CRAZY and now I am dying to bake this recipe but is SOOOOOOOOOOO hot here in California, I am not sure if I could wait until the wheater gets cooler. THANKS LIZZY FOR SHARING YOUR PASSION :0
Oh my gosh, this is ridiculous….ly amazing!!! Holy crap I need to make these immediately!
Oh Yummy! Definently need to make these SOON! Do these need to be refrigerated?
THANK YOU!!!!!! YUM! YUM! YUM!
Yeah, I’d like to know if they need to be refrigerated, too. I would think the cookie dough would need to stay refrigerated.
If it’s just for 24 hours, then you shouldn’t need to refrigerate them
Ever thote abt a snickers or twix cup cake?
Slutty cupcakes!! Heck yes, nice work!
These were awesome! Thank you so much for sharing the recipe! Everyone that I shared them with, loved them!!!! 🙂
I wondered about the cookie dough filling recipe for these. This recipe is different from a previous Cookie Dough Cupcake recipe you posted (10/2011). Mainly, the amount of flour is almost doubled here. Do you recommend one recipe over the other? Thanks!
They just have different textures. One if more soft and gooey and the other is more similar to a cookie dough. Just add flour a little at a time until you are happy with the texture 🙂
Finally!!! 🙂 My son and I are going to love making and eating these!
P.S. We love your site. We have been baking your cupcake recipes for a few months now, and have baked 6 recipes with a few repeats. We love all of them, especially the banana cupcakes. Keep it up!
Holy cow! I just saw these in a “Cupcakes Take the Cake” email and cannot wait to make them, thank you!!
I have no idea what happened, but the cookie dough turned out just awful! It was really dry, so I added some milk to get it to stick together at all. It tasted like flour and milk! Any advice?
I wonder how these would be with the Nutella buttercream AND brownie crumbles on top.
I can’t believe the multitude of flavors jumping out of this tasty cupcake. Hello! Yummy! We did some with the filling and some without; both are delicious! Thank you for sharing!
PS How in the world do you cut them so that the photo is perfect? My chocolate frosting keeps touching all over my white cake. I tell the frosting to keep its sticky fingers to itself, but frosting NEVER listens. LOL
Run your knife under some hot water, wipe it off, then cut it 🙂
Hi Lizzy, do you make your own brownies or do you use store bought ones? These look unbelievable! I have already made your fave choc cupcakes this week and going to do your choc/raspberry ones tomorrow… But i just might have to whip the mixing bowls out this afternoon and make these little beauties. It is a joy to make your creations! 🙂
I did make my own brownies for these, but honestly, brownies from a box are still great (and easier)!
A friend made these for her daughter’s Bday last Friday. THE BEST CUPCAKES I HAVE EVER HAD! I am making them this weekend for my mom’s birthday. Can’t wait to have them again!
Theres no available white cake mix in our place.. I was hoping i could do the white cake mix by scratch but im confuse if the taste would be different since you have to add eggs, sour cream in other ingredients. with the ready made white cake mix..
This may sound like a dumb question but how or what size of tip do you use to swirl the frosting on the cupcake or how you do it. They look soooooo good and cannot wait to try this recipe thanks. 🙂
Head over to Youtube and type in “Your Cup of Cake” to see my piping tutorial. To get any classic swirl use any closed star piping tip like a Wilton 2D or something a little more open.
How do you think this would work with yellow cake mix instead of white? I’m not a huge fan of white cake mix and have a ton of yellow cake mixes in my pantry right now. I was wondering if anyone has tried it with yellow cake mix.
Sounds delicious!
Hi, Love this!!! Reading over the ingredients list and wanted to know if you used salted or unsalted butter? I’m assuming salted as you do not add salt to the batters but I just wanted to double check. Thanks!
I use unsalted butter, but a lot of people use salted and love it
I made a dozen of these, I ate 2 and my boyfriend 10! They are super yummy. I used the leftover cookiedough and it made the most amazing cookies. I just added 1 tsp salt and 1 tsp baking soda. This is now my go to cookie recipe!
Oh awesome!
these look amazing & i can not wait to try them! only question i have is ……. once upon a time i tried to make an oreo cupcake w/ the 1/2 oreo in the bottom of the cupcake just like here .. it turned out bad .. worse than bad .. it got all burnt & nasty & i followed the directions exactly .. is there some sort of trick to get that to turn out right? b/c these look amazing & i do not want to mess them up!!!
It’s your oven that just heats from the bottom. You can try messing around with what rack you put the cakes on. You can also just chop the Oreos into pieces and put them in the batter, I love doing that!
Does a convection oven work better for these?
convection just tends to bake them faster, not necessarily better
I shared to my group, copying your link.to Foods for Foodies, I hope that is okay. If not please let me know. I included my email and url. thanks so much!
Hi!! These sound amazing!! Would using a yellow cake mix and putting chopped up oreos work in the batter? Or would it be too much? 🙂
yellow mix is great and chopped up oreos in the batter is fabulous! I’ve done it before and it’s really great!
Thanks!! Can’t wait to make them. 🙂
Hi! With using a yellow cake mix in place of the white, and chopping oreos to put in the batter, do I need to change any of the other ingredients? Still call for the same amount of extract? Thanks!!! I’m making these tomorrow to give to my students’ parents who volunteered in my class.
A yellow mix will work just fine, no need to change anything!
Great!!! Can’t wait to make one and try one for myself too. Thank you!!!
I just made these to test them out ahead of time for my brother & fiance’s wedding shower…and wow they are just as amazing as they look!!! I love how the cake turned out too, the texture is great.
These sound wonderful…I often make cookie dough cupcakes, but freeze the cookie dough in balls and pop them in the unbaked cupcake. The cupcake cooks, the cookie dough remains cookie dough…eliminates the need to cut out the middle of your cupcakes…just a thought!
My kinda boyfriends birthday is coming up and im considering baking these for him buuuut it seems like a bit too mich work and im in sports… Are there any corners i can cut without ruining it?
You can buy cookie dough from the store and use that to stuff them 🙂 You can also just do normal chocolate frosting and add extra cocoa to make it really chocolatey! Love the “kinda” boyfriend thing, I know how that goes…. 🙂
You are genius, you make really awesome and very creative combination of flavors in your cupcakes.
I made these wonderful cupcakes tonight. WOW. They were a HUGE hit!!! Thank you for a great recipe!
Oh good! Happy you enjoyed them!
These were a HUGE hit. Awesome recipe.
Do I add additional eggs to the recipe other than what it says on the box??? Please help me figure this out!!!! Thanks!!!!
Pay no attention to the box recipe, just use the dry mix as an ingredient!
I originally found this recipe on pinterest and it looked amazing! It took me to another site and I could tell from the watermark that it wasn’t theirs. I change the source address for the pin so it would take others here. This cupcake as well as the others on your site look amazing and I can’t wait to try them all for myself. Thanks for the great recipe. – A new follower
Thanks so much! Yes, that pinterest thing happens all the time with people taking my images 🙁 Thanks for switching it!!!!
Hi! I don’t understand one thing in directions. Do you bake Cookie Dough Filling? After 8. step (Use a knife to cut out small holes of each cupcake and fill with cookie dough filling. You can do this while the cupcakes are still warm.) Do I have to put it in oven or what?
You don’t bake the cookie dough filling, you still want it to be like “dough.” And I would let the cupcakes mostly cook before cutting and filling!
Tnx 😀 I will try to make it tomorrow. 😉
How do you get the brownies crumbles small enough to go through the wilton tip? And how come you don’t see any chunks in you frosting?
I beat the chunks into the frosting and that breaks the chunks up!
Hey just wanted to give you a quick heads upp andd let you know a few of the
images aren’t loading properly. I’m not sure why but I think
iits a linking issue. I’ve tried it iin two different internet browsers and both show the same results.
Hm, they’re loading fine for me!
I enjoy what you guys tend to be up too. This sort of clever work and coverage!
Keep up the awesome works guys I’ve included you guys to my personal blogroll.
Sounds super lazy of me, I know…. but, can I use cookie dough from the store? Or do I need to make my own?
Can you freeze the left over cookie dough filling to use later?
I am really enjoying the theme/design of your site.
Do you ever run into any web browser compatibility issues? A small number of my blog visitors have complained about my website not operating
correctly in Explorer but looks great in Opera. Do you have any suggestions to help fix this problem?
So I have a quick question, could you just use the whole Oreo instead of taking one top off? Is there a purpose to the 1/2? Thank you!
I have made these several times and they are always a big hit! My only question is how do you keep the oreo cream from melting?
Hm, mine never does! But a little trick you can use is to freeze the crushed oreos first! Then pop them into the batter cold!
Instead of using a knife to cut a small hole for the filling in cupcakes, I use a mellon ball tool (a small one) It works perfectly every time 🤗
