Nutella Cupcakes
Ingredients
Cake:
- Devil’s Food Cake Mix
- 3 eggs
- ½ cup oil
- ¼ cup milk
- ½ cup water
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 cup sour cream
- 24 teaspoons Nutella 1 per cupcake
Nutella Buttercream:
- ¾ cup Nutella
- ¼ cup butter softened
- 1 ½ -2 ½ cups powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 3-4 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
Instructions
-
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line 24 muffins tins.
-
2. In a large bowl, whisk eggs, oil, milk, water and vanilla.
-
3. Sift in cake mix and stir in sour cream.
-
4. Fill cupcake liners ¾ full and then place a teaspoon of Nutella on top of each one. Using a toothpick, swirl the Nutella into the batter.
-
5. Bake for 14-18 minutes or until the sides spring back. (The tops will stay gooey because of the Nutella.)
-
6. Remove the cupcakes from the oven and place directly into airtight containers so seal in moisture.
-
7. Buttercream: Beat the Nutella and butter for 5 minutes. Add vanilla, then alternate between adding powdered sugar and heavy whipping cream. Taste the buttercream until you reach your desired sweetness. You may need to refrigerate the buttercream before piping it onto cooled cupcakes.

I love Nutella, I so can't wait to try these. I made the coconut cakes the other day and everyone loved them they were so moist. Thanks for sharing your wonderful ideas and recipes!!!
Lizzy Mae says
Patti, what do you mean by easier? I just bought the normal container of Nutella and put a little in each cupcake and then used the rest for the buttercream. The Nutella baked-in makes for a gooey center 🙂
Katie Jensen says
Let me tell you…These cupcakes were the best i've ever had. And i'm not just saying that because they were my boyfriends idea and my best friend who made them. 🙂
B says
I think what Patti is trying to say is that when you read that as an ingredient in the ingredient list it sounds like you are scooping 24 teaspoons of Nutella into the batter which would be a bit silly. Usually when perusing recipes I read the ingredients quickly to determine whether I want to make something and assume that the procedure is standard. I was already trying to do conversions in my head until I read your comment below.

oh my these look delicious!!!
Lizzy Mae says
Thank you everyone! If you want to use homemade batter, great! Just treat the recipe the same and add the Nutella into the individual cupcakes before they bake.
Rachel says
Your photos are spectacular! Can you tell me about your camera?
Lizzy Mae says
Rachel, my camera is nothing grand. It is a small Cannon Power Shot SD 900, 10 mega pixels. It is a about 6 years old, but it works so well for me because the macro function is wonderful. That is all that matters for cupcake photos.
The Eggertz Family says
They are in the oven as we speak…..can't wait to devour them one by one! (and maybe share a few….maybe….)
Patti says
Lizzy- in my earlier comment, I didn't read through the directions, only the list of ingredients, therefore, 24 tsp. of Nutella seemed like a lot of measuring. Sorry! I should have read the directions. I'm supposed to take brownies to a function tomorrow, but maybe I'll show up with these instead! Thanks for the recipe, and I'll be sure to read the whole thing next time 🙂

Made these for Easter – and everyone RAVED about them. Easy and delicious!!!
Amber says
These sound amazing! Curious as to whether the cupcakes will get too soggy by putting them all in an airtight container? Also, do you think they'd freeze well?
Lizzy Mae says
Amber, if you are really worried, let them cool for about 5-7 minutes, and then put them in containers. But don't wait until they are totally cooled, I promise you'll love the results! They are SO moist, so yes I do think they would freeze well.

hmmmm, do you think you can substitute angel food or vanilla cake mix in this recipe?? I love nutella and chocolate icing, but not usually chocolate based cake. 😉
Dana says
You have great ideas for cakes, however all your recipes start with box cakes. I am a baker and love to bake from scratch. I would love to have these recipes from scratch.

Everyone loved these – especially the teens and tweens. I always think chocolate cake dries out faster, so the idea in step 6 made a difference. Will try with other chocolate recipes.
And I think a vanilla cupcake with a nutella surprise inside sounds delish!
Christina says
I found your blog through Homebased Mom and bookmarked your Nutella cupcake several months ago but I haven't had an excuse to make them until today. They are beautiful, just like your pictures and beyond yummy! I've been drooling over so many of your other recipes. I think I'll be making your Orange White Chocolate Cupcakes next weekend for my neice's mission farewell.
Thanks for the inspiration and really top notch recipes.

flour is flour whether it comes out of a box or a bag. all that matters is that the finished cupcake looks and tastes fabulous !!! keep it up Lizzy……your cupcakes are amazing. !!!

Made these today and can't wait to see how my co-workers like them tomorrow! Thanks for a great recipe. I can't wait to make some more of your cupcake recipes!

Personally I like that you use a box mix! It makes it seem much more doable and still tastes great. If people want it from scratch they can put some work of their own into it and figure out how to do it their own way! Can't wait to try this recipe! Thanks for the great idea 🙂

just made these! they are just as delicious as they look!!! thanks for the great recipe! I'll be sure to pass it along =)

Do you think that there is ANYWAY to incorporate peanut butter?!
Lizzy Mae says
Oh yes! You can check out my Peanut Butter Nutella Cupcakes 🙂 Just search for them on the side of my site where it says search. Or you can simply add a little bit of peanut butter into the buttercream with the nutella. You may need to add a little extra powdered sugar as well to keep it thick enough.

Hi Lizzy! Just had to say that I just made these and they were AH-MAZING!! My daughter absolutely loves Nutella so she will be so excited when she wakes up for school tomorrow. My husband is even asking for seconds which he normally doesn’t do. 😉 Your site is just a treasure and I look forward to getting your cookbook. I’ve also made your peanut butter and chocolate rice krispy treats and those disappeared quickly as I’m sure these cupcakes will too. Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful recipes! 😉
