Homemade Oreos are the best. I have to be careful when I make them because I will eat the whole batch! My original Homemade Oreos are incredible, but these are also another fun take on the treat! Brownie Batter Filling! Yes! It’s a similar buttercream from my Brownie Batter Cupcakes that I got rave reviews on 🙂
The Story:
Utah keeps having these big thunderstorms one day every week. It’s 60 and rainy and the valley is covered in clouds and it’s gorgeous. And then the next day is always 90 degrees.
I’m so ready for Fall. Bring on the boot socks, scarfs, big cuddly blankets and nights with Oreos and milk on the couch.

Brownie Batter Oreos
Ingredients
Chocolate Cake Mix Cookies:
- 1 box devil's food cake mix I like Pillsbury mixes for these cookies
- 2 eggs
- 1/3 C. oil
- 2 tsp. vanilla extract
Brownie Batter Filling:
- 3/4 C. butter room temperature
- 1/2 C. brownie mix dry from the box
- 1/4 C. cocoa powder unsweetened
- 1 pinch salt
- 2 tsp. vanilla extract
- 2 Tbsp. milk
- 1-2 C. powdered sugar
Instructions
-
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line cookie sheets with parchment paper.
-
2. Sift cake mix into a large bowl to remove ay lumps.
-
3. Add eggs, oil and vanilla extract and stir until smooth. Dough will be thick.
-
4. Make dough balls (about the size of golf balls-or a little smaller) and place on cookie sheets 2 inches apart and gently press down on the dough balls to flatten them out a bit.
-
5. Bake for 6-8 minutes, depending on how fudgey or cakey you prefer them.
-
6. Let cool.
-
7. Brownie Batter Filling: Beat butter, brownie mix, cocoa powder, salt, vanilla extract and milk together until smooth. Slowly add in powdered sugar a little at a time until you reach your desired consistency. Taste. If it's not sweet enough for your liking, add more powdered sugar (and milk if it gets too stiff).
-
8. Frost the bottoms of half the cookies and then sandwich the unfrosted cookies on top of the frosted ones to make your Oreos! Place in a tupperware and let set in the fridge for at least 30 minutes until eating. I will usually just let them sit overnight! (You don't have to let them chill but I think they're SO much better cold 🙂 )
I hardly ever buy Oreos at the store because I’ll eat them all that night, but this summer I was partial to the chocolate fudge Oreos, so I had to do my own take on those 🙂
Looks totally yummy!
I love mint-filled oreo’s so I’m going to try this recipe but substitue using your mint filling that you used on your Andes Mint Chocolate Cake.
I love me some Oreos. These look delicious!!
These sound delicious! Have to give them a try…then try them with some Nutella filling also 🙂
Holy cow you put brownie batter in Oreos. I think I love you even more! 🙂 Homemade Oreos are always the best. Pinned!
Hi Lizzy! Thanks for the awesome recipe! I made a batch of these and they ended up staying a big ball after being cooked and didn’t flatten. I went to your original Oreo recipe, where it tells you to flatten them before cooking. I’m guessing that was the mistake, but thought I’d let you know it doesn’t tell you to do that on this one so that others don’t make the same mistake! Thanks for all the wonderful recipes! 🙂
Oh my, I am so sorry! I fixed that error! Sometimes it just depends on which brand of cake mix you use, some spread way out and some bake up tall if they aren’t pressed down.
Lizzy, YUM is all I can say. I made this for dinner tonight. They worked exactly how you said and the one we shared was so delicious. Thanks for coming up with such fun recipes. I will enjoy checking out your website for new and delicious recipes.
Karalee 🙂
I meant for the dessert not for the dinner….
I was wanting to make these for a bake sale and was wondering if they would still look that good if they were not refrigerated overnight? They look so yummy!
Yes! They’re just easier to transport and taste a little better cold 🙂
