The Story:
I remember the first time I ever had this so called “Puppy Chow” or “Muddy Buddies” whatever you want to call it. I was at a wedding reception at my friend’s house and it was this weird looking white-coated powdery stuff served in little souffle cups. But I wasn’t a picky eater, so I decided to give it a shot.
By the end of the night I had about 9 of those little souffle cups stacked on my plate. Empty.
Butterfinger Puppy Chow

- 6 C. Rice Chex Cereal

- 1/2 C. peanut butter smooth
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract

Instructions
-
1. Measure out your Chex cereal into a large bowl and set aside.
-
2. In a medium microwave proof bowl, melt milk chocolate melts, peanut butter and vanilla extract until smooth. (About 45 seconds, then stir, then 15 more seconds)
-
3. Pour melted chocolate/peanut butter over cereal and stir until well coated.
-
4. Dump into a large plastic bag or a tupperware with a lid, add crushed Butterfingers and shake until well coated.

5. Dump onto a cookie sheet to let cool.
-
6. Hide it all because it will disappear way too fast.

Crushed them in a plastic bag, but you can use a blender too!

How many Butterfinger bars = 1 1/3 cups?
Lizzy Mae Early says
I used chi-o-sticks but about 4 or 5 regular sized Butterfingers should be great!
Carol says
Thanks — I used 4 full-size Butterfinger bars and it turned out great. Served it last night to my singing group and they inhaled it!!! Thanks for the great recipe and all the puppy chow variations.

Fun! I say to start with the Peanut Butter Brownie ones, they are awesome and a good introduction.

This looks delicious, I bet my kids would love this. I havent seen chick-o-sticks in my area for a long while though.
Lizzy Mae Early says
Yeah, I found a big box of a bunch so I snagged them. But Butterfingers will work great!
Kelly says
Ummm…Wow! Just wow. Can’t wait to try!

Fabulous twist on the classic puppy chow! I remember when I first had it-it looked weird but I ended up cleaning the bowl LOL
PapaLos - The Man, The Chef, The Dad says
I am a Butterfinger fanatic and this looks amazing! I’m sure it’s more dangerous than amazing though because I would eat the entire batch. Hope I get to try it soon!

I made the PB Brownie Puppy Chow today and wante to know if you had issues with the chocolate chips melting. I used nestle chocolate chips and I don’t know if I just had it in the microwave too long but it was somewhat clumpy and didn’t blend into my peanut butter smoothly. Any thoughts would be appreciated, thank!
Lizzy Mae Early says
If it was clumpy like the chips didn’t melt all the way, then you needed to microwave it longer. If it was clumpy like…dry. then it started to burn. A lot of times its the BOWL that is your problem. It needs to be a microwave proof bowl, so if you pull out the bowl and the bowl is really hot…don’t use that bowl. Because it will cook the chocolate too hot where the chocolate touches the bowl. I hope that makes sense…
Andrea says
I also had trouble with the chip mix being dry, and I did cook it in a microwave safe bowl. I added a few tablespoons of butter, and it was fine.

I live in Canada and we don’t have Butterfingers here. Been so long since I’ve been to the states and had one I can’t remember what they taste like. Can you recommend a different candy bar that would be a good substitude? Thanks.
Lizzy Mae Early says
Hmm… you know they really aren’t like anything else. There are recipes online to make your own butterfingers, you could give that a shot!
Nan says
The Cadbury “Crispy Crunch” sold in Canada is very similar to a Butterfinger!
Tara says
Could I use semisweet chocolate chips instead of milk chocolate melts? My husband would love this!
Lizzy Mae Early says
yes, of course! I just say milk chocolate because that’s what butterfingers are made with
Foodpusherkelly says
Oh. My. Gosh. I’m so excited about making this! Do you mind if I post it on my blog with a link back here? Did you think of this all on your own? Genius.
Lizzy Mae Early says
You just can’t use the photos, other than that go for it!
Foodpusherkelly says
Thanks!

I’m a huge Butterfingers fan and finally made this today. I had the same problem that Kate had with the lumpy/hard chocolate and PB mixture. I sucessfully melt chocolate all the time in my microwave bowl but I’ve never combined it with PB. I used reduced fat PB, could that be the cause?? My melting time was 5 seconds over the directions… I still made it work but the Chex wasn’t coated evenly; however it was still deadly-oh yumtastic!!
Thanks for an awesome recipe!
Lizzy Mae Early says
It must be the reduced fat issue then. Hmpf. That’s frustrating, I am so sorry.
shila says
chocolate chips will mix, not sure if chocolate melts are the same thing but i used ghirardelli chocolate chips with great success
Lizzy Mae Early says
Yes! Ghiradelli has less stabilizers, so it works well for puppy chow
Anne says
I had the same problem and ended up adding 1/4 cup margarine like the regular puppy chow recipe calls for. Made it just thin enough to coat.
Lizzy Mae Early says
It just depends if you use melts or chocolate chips and how many stabilizers your chocolate chips have in them. The more stabilizers, the less likely it is to melt thin.
Joe Sammarco says
Wow ! Gotta do this one. This sounds like a 1 day project – you make it one day and it’s all gone before the next day !
Bethany says
I made these for the 4th of July and they were a big hit! I really couldn’t get the Butterfinger to stick, though, and these pretty much just tasted a lot like the original recipe we all know with a little extra “something”.
Lizzy Mae Early says
Maybe add more melted chocolate and be sure to really crush your butterfingers. Put them in a food processor or blender even.
Chrissy Windsor says
Made this tonight with my girls & it was a hit!! Worked perfectly ~ Thanks for the recipe!
Kelly says
I just made this! I actually added about a tablespoon of butter to melt with the chocolate chips, pb and vanilla. Helped make it smooth. Then when I shook up the cereal and the butterfingers I also added some powdered sugar! AMAZING! Regular puppy chow with a twist! LOve it.
Kayla says
Loved it! I tried 1/4 cup peanut butter and 1/4 cup Nutella and it turned out great! Yummmm.
AmandaMariie says
Oo my!! My boyfriend LOVES butterfingers, I am gonna get the ingredients && make this!! Thanks 🙂
Sarah @ Miss CandiQuik says
