BBQ season is in full swing and I just cant get enough burgers, fresh fruit, hot dogs and pasta salads! Don’t even get me started about my obsession with this recipe for KILLER baked beans! Every BBQ or potluck needs an amazing macaroni salad and this one is authentic Hawaiian Mac Salad! It’s very simple but packed with flavor. It pairs great with all the classic BBQ foods but if you really want to get Hawaiian then whip up some teriyaki BBQ chicken to go with it!
How to Make Hawaiian Macaroni Salad
My biggest tip for making this World’s Best Hawaiian Macaroni Salad would be to let the pasta cool all the way before mixing in the dressing! If you add the dressing to warm pasta it will absorb into the pasta too much and leave the salad dry. Some people also like to add celery, so feel free to adjust the recipe as you like. Also, use quality mayo! They brand and type of mayo you use will make or break this recipe so pick you absolute favorite tasting kind!

I usually make them all summer long anyway but I sometimes just get too busy having so much fun to post the recipes, but I finally got around to it! I have had so much great response to these new recipes too, so thanks for loving them as much as I do! My Buffalo Chicken Pasta Salad is probably my most creative recipe and my husband’s new favorite. World’s Best Hawaiian Macaroni Salad
Ingredients
- 1 lb pasta cooked according to package directions, cooled
- 2 cups mayonnaise
- 1/2 cup grated carrot use the large grating holes
- 1/3 cup grated sweet yellow onion
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp ground pepper
Instructions

In a large mixing bowl mix all of the ingredients, except the cold pasta, until they are well incorporated.

Mix the cold pasta in the same bowl until the pasta is well coated. Refrigerate for an hour then serve.

I’m from Hawaii. Oahu to be exact.EVERY Zippy’s & L&L drive in only serve this Mac salad. It’s automatic. Mac salad 2 scoops rice & then whatever u want. Teri beef, or chicken Katsu or chicken adobo. The list goes on. NEVER I REPEAT HAS ANY PLACE IN HAWAII PUT Sauerkraut in they’re Mac salad! Case closed

This is a very delicious recipe, my mom made this for many many years. This was the popular side dish that everyone wanted my mom to bring to cookouts, dinners, parties. She also added celery and always used Miracle Whip (God forbid if anyone didnt taste the Miracle Whip it would just set there).

There’s a couple important elements and techniques missing in making the authentic Hawaiian Mac Salad.
Once the pasta is drained and still hot, mix and combine the grated onions with the pasta. Then add carrots and celery.
For the dressing….this is what makes the difference between an average mac salad vs the authentic Hawaiian Mac Salad.
Consider adding 1 cup of milk and a teaspoon of rice vinegar to the mayo. Mix and combine. It will be thin and liquidy.
Combine and mix the dressing into the pasta mixture. It will appear as though the pasta is floating in the thin liquid dressing.
Place everything into a container, then into the fridge for at least 4 hours or overnight.
This will create the creamiest Mac salad, like the kind the locals are familiar with.
Side note:. The locals of Hawaii swear by only using Hellman’s of Best Foods Mayo. However, I have found Dukes Mayo to be a better choice for me. Any of these three are good mayo choices.

Just add chopped cooked potatoes, some chopped boiled eggs and a well drained can of albacore tuna. Do not use sugar, celery or miracle whip. Only use a very rich egg based mayonaise like Best Foods.or Wilsey premium mayo. And over cook the pasta a little. The mayo will.absorb better. Also makea slurry with the carrots, grated onion, well.drained tuna, mayo, chopped egg, salt and pepper first. Then mix in cooled potato and cooled macaroni.
