The Story:
My summers as a kid were spent at camps. Every week I was off in the wilderness, on the basketball court, sleeping under the stars or playing an epic game of capture the flag in woods in Washington state. My summers smelled of pine trees and campfire and they were always perfect. But the best way to end my days was with a dessert. A slice of cake, a bowl of ice cream or a good ‘ole fashioned dirt pudding.

What size tip do you use?
#805 Ateco tip, but you can use a ziplock bag and cut a hole off the tip that’s about a 1/2 inch in diameter
Oh my word- my kids will love those
What brand and size of tip did you use? Also, where do you find the larger tips? Thanks!
PS- loved the pistachio cupcakes! We enjoyed them a lot.
I used Ateco # 805 for this tip but the large round tip bakeries use is Ateco #809
I loved dirt pudding!! And these cupcakes are so cute!! love that you layered the worms- looks so real! In a good way! LOL
i am hoping you can help me. I searched in FAQ and tips and tricks but did not find an answer to my quandry. When I make cupcakes I either have them overflowing or not enough batter in cup. Can you tell me what you use to get a consistently filled 3/4 cupcake full of batter? I honestly believe that that part of the baking process is what makes a beautiful end result cupcake. I am talking about standard size cupcakes. Any help you can offer a novice would be great.
Honestly, deciding how much to fill the cups depend on where you live and your altitude. I use a 2 oz scoop when I fill my baking cups.
These are so cute! I admit that the worms slightly gross out the girly girl in me but I’m sure my two boys would love them 😉
Every time I come to your site, it reminds me of childhood and all the things as a child I once loved and have forgotten. You are amazing!
I was totally going to make something similar to these for my son’s class for his birthday tomorrow!! He wanted dirt cups but I wanted to make cupcakes, so I thought I’d combine the 2!! Now I’ve got a great recipe to follow! Thanks!
So fun!! I remember having dirt cakes in second grade!1 What fun memories!
yum these look so good!!! i love the layering idea with the gummy worms!!
I’m so happy right now….This has decided which of your cupcakes I’m going to make next. I’m basically a twelve year old in a woman’s body – think I’ll use sour gummi worms, though! Might as well get my sugar overdose in while I’m at it. 🙂
Mmm… sounds so good!
How many ounces was the cake mix you used?
15 or 18 oz mixes work!
These look AMAZING! Crushing oreos was a great idea to make the dirt.
Just wondering, how long does it take on average (keeping in mind though i am not a slow baker, i am certainly not a fast one either!), to make these???
(including the decorations (dirt, gummi worms and piping))
Many thanks
Kiera x
How long… oh that will vary. Making the cupcakes and letting them cool about an hour because they need like 30 minutes to cool (I always make frosting while they cool). When you decorate, do them all at once not one at a time. So lay out worms on all, then frost one layer on all…so on and so on.

These look perfect for a picnic birthday party for my soon to be 6yr old but to save time leading up to it I’m wondering if I can make the cupcake part in advance and freeze them for a week or two then take them out and frost the night before.
Can’t wait to try them!
Yes, you can do that! But make sure you let them cool all the way before freezing them or else you’ll have a sticky mess…
