Homemade Golden Oreos made with yellow or butter cake mix! So easy… they’re dangerous. Plus, you know me, I’m OBSESSED with my original Homemade Oreos, it’s always my favorite go-to dessert because everyone loves them!
My new cookbook Make it with a Cake Mix came out last week! It’s full of cupcakes, bunt cakes, layered cakes, cookies, whoopee pies and basically everything you can make with a cake mix! I put some popular recipes from the blog in the book but there are TONS of recipes the blog has never seen! I worked really hard on this book and I hope you all love it!
We had a book signing on Saturday and my mother flew in from Chicago to see me!
These sweet girls drove over an hour to come meet me and get their new books signed, how cute are they?!
Some of my college friends even stopped by!

Homemade Golden Oreos
Ingredients
Cake Mix Cookies:
- 1 box yellow or butter cake mix
- 2 eggs
- 1/4 C. plus 1 Tbsp. oil
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
Cream Cheese Filling:
- 6 oz. cream cheese
- 6 Tbsp butter, softened
- 2 tsp. vanilla extract
- 2 1/2- 3 1/2 C. powdered sugar
Instructions
-
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line pans with parchment paper.
-
2. Sift cake mix into a large bowl and add eggs, oil and vanilla extract.
-
3. Stir until combined, batter will be thick.
-
4. Make dough balls about the size of a walnut and place them 3 inches apart from each other.
-
5. Bake for 7-9 minutes depending on how fudge or or crispy you like your cookies.
-
6. Let cool.
-
7. Cream cheese filling: Beat cream cheese and butter. Add vanilla extract and slowly add in powdered sugar until you reach your desired consistency.
-
8. To assemble, frost the bottoms of half of your cooled cookies. Then place an untrusting cookie on top of the frosted ones to create little "sandwiches." I like to put mine in a tupperware and let them chill in the fridge before eating! That way, the frosting doesn't gush out the sides when you eat them!
Congratulations on your cookbook Lizzy and these cookies look fantastic!
These look so pretty and I bet they’d be perfect for a table of Easter desserts 🙂 also, I laughed at the idea of putting “an untrusting cookie” on top to make a little sandwich
Lizzy, do you have a signing schedule? Are you coming to the East Coast?
I’ll really only be signing out west! Sorry! But you can always call a store out here in Provo Utah and I can sign it and they can mail it!
I love your home made oreos!! My friends loved them when I made them. Are you coming to Portland Oregon sometime for book signing?
Not until August! I have another trip planned out there for then!
Lemon cake mix makes great Oreos too!
Besides online, where is your book available?
It’s available in a TON of stores in UT, Deseret Book stores and a few other stores around the US. It just sort of depends what stores order it in!
Your mother is gorgeous! Lovely photos. I am now off to Amazon.ca (they better have your book in Canada!) to order your new book!
Hey Lizzy,
I’m a big fan of your page and your recipes 🙂 I’m always browsing your gallery to find things to try myself. I noticed that you usually use cake mixes (devils/angels…) and actually this is what is keeping me to bake your cupcakes or cookies because here in Germany I can hardly find those 🙁 Is there by any chance a possibility to substitute the cake mixes? I would really appreciate your help! Looking forward to more of your delicious entries!
This blog as well as the new cookbook has the recipes to make your own cake mixes!!
I’m looking forward to trying these! One question, when you put the cake batter balls on the cookie sheet do you flatten them before baking or do they flatten themselves as they bake? Thanks!!!
I flatten them before they bake, I use a Pillsbury mix and they puff up a lot at they bake!
When I found this recipe I knew that I had to try these because I totally love Golden Oreos and there not available where I live (Europe). So I tried them today but with another all-selfmade cookie dough. They’re delicous!
I also wanna say that I find your blog amazing 🙂 And congrats to your cookbook!
Thanks so much! My neighbors are obsessed with these and make they every other day!
Hi Lizzy… I love your recipes and your blog…where can I get your books..? Im from Mexico…
They are sold on Amazon!
Good morning, Lizzy!
Your mother is absolutely gorgeous! And congratulations on another cookbook being published!
I love this blog and your insights. Thank you for all the hard work and sharing it with us!
These look good but i wouldn’t call them “oreos” since Oreo filling is not cream cheese flavored.
